A brief rundown of recent races:
Hillyfields: A homecoming of sorts, this race took place in the grounds of my former art college in Colchester. It’s been 20 years and I had hoped for a triumphant return, but Ross Tricker got away early and, although I was 2nd for most of the race, an in-form Jules Birks caught me with a lap to go, before catching Tricker for the win. Bad legs and bad skills; 3rd place.
Davy Down: The venue of my first ever cross race 3 years ago, it looked like I was going to storm this one, until some wayward grass and a poor gear selection tore of my rear mech. A long run, a wheel swap and some very tired legs meant I could only hang on for 3rd place. Could have been worse, but could have been my best win of the season. That’s racing, as someone, somewhere might say. Tricker wins.
Welwyn: Some very tough competition at this one, and I was feeling bad for a lap or two. Managed, just, to stay with the leaders until the legs came good and I had a storming last lap. Not quite storming enough, as Jules Birks pipped me to the post, but it was looking like a DNF for a while there, so I’ll take a 2nd place, ta very much.
